Today some little quick tips about some features in the CMTrace tool which I didn’t use and haven’t noticed before, you all did know about it I presume

We all know that Wally Mead prefers using Notepad.exe when looking at the log files of the Configuration Manager Servers and Clients. Others use the CMTrace.exe utility which you can use to analyze the log files. Besides looking up error descriptions like shown below you are also able to do other things.

When pressing on the Values box in the Query builder while creating a Collection in ConfigMgr you might run into an error that states that “The operation has completed successfully, but the information list has been truncated to the maximum configured count of 2000 items.” For SMS 2.0 and ConfigMgr 2007 there was a registry key that you were able to configure to see more items.
Error connecting to the Primary Site
When using a service account to run for instance my “cleaning ConfigMgr” Powershell script you may run in to an error. When trying to access the Windows PowerShell drive that is mapped to your Primary Site you will receive the following error: “set-location : Cannot find drive. A drive with the name <primary site> does not exist.” (see figure on the left) I see the same behavior when for instance running a Powershell script from System Center Orchestrator 2012 to change settings in Configuration Manager 2012 SP1.
Today I released a new version of the “Cleanup in AD deleted devices via Powershell in ConfigMgr 2012 SP1” script that was originally released in March of this year. In this new version the following is changed:
- Ability to set the Maximum Query Result Size of ConfigMgr 2012 SP1, by default this is 1000 items
- Fixed little bug while searching in AD for objects give back a number higher than 1. (more AD objects with the same name)

This morning the Cumulative Update 1 for System Center 2012 Configuration Manager Service Pack 1 has been released. Within this update several components are updates and some new Powershell cmdlets are added to the list of supported cmdlets. The following components are updated:
- Administrator Console
- Site systems
- Device management
- Software updates
- Client
- Powershell

I think this could be one of the most requested features for Service Pack 1, namely the ability to add a Central Administration Site (CAS) to your Configuration Manager 2012 hierarchy. In my series about the top 10 nicest new features we are going to look how adding a CAS looks like and when you should add a CAS to your hierarchy.
Adding a CAS will be a rare action though, but it is nice that the ability to add a CAS to a stand-alone primary site is added to Configuration Manager 2012 Service Pack 1.

How cool is this, thanks to Microsoft Evangelist Marcel Nieuwpoort (and his team) who created the “App in a snap”-template this blog can now also be followed via the ConfigMgrBlog.com Windows 8 App.
Via the application you are able to read the intro from my blog posts and browse to the complete article via the link below the intro. In the future I will try to extend the app with several options. If you have an idea, please let me know!

Last week the XenApp Connector for System Center 2012 Configuration Manager, former Project Thor, was silently released by Citrix. In comparison to the earlier Technical Preview version, this version supports also Service Pack 1 of Configuration Manager 2012. In this version, both APP-V 4.6 SP2 and APP-V 5.0 are supported. Last Thursday I had the pleasure and honor to be on stage with deployment and ConfigMgr expert Kenneth van Surskum and presenting a session about ConfigMgr 2013: notes from the field at the TechDays Netherlands 2013. During our session we shared what is new in ConfigMgr 2012 and Service Pack 1 that was released earlier this year. Next to tips and trips we showed that you can also manage Windows Embedded devices, MAC OS-X with ConfigMgr 2012 SP1 and that you are able to delegate your management of parts of your ConfigMgr assets with Role Based Administration.
